Northern Cape Developer Hackathon (NCDevHack) is an annual provincial hackathon (coding and innovation festival) aimed at stimulating and developing more ICT/Entrepreneurship in the province.

The 2017 Theme: Digital Innovation for Economic Acceleration

With a culture of hackathons on the rise, we need to explore the role that hackathons in academic access, excitation and acceleration in bringing about excellence. Participants will be challenged to contextualize their solutions for the betterment of life and channel economic growth.

  • ITWeb Security Summit Hackathon (SS17Hack)

  • As a first edition, the hackathon only accommodated 30 people at Vodacom World in Midrand. The Northern Cape Department of Economic Development and Tourism has commissioned a parallel Security Hackathon in Kimberley, on 16 and 17 May, in collaboration with Sol Plaatje University, Geekulcha Student Society (GKSS).

  • Fun Run and Career Day Prieska

  • The main goal was to unite and up lift youth in Prieska, Pixley Ka Seme and the surrounding areas by getting them physically active together as well as empower them with key knowledge on how to apply to local tertiary institutions and how to go about starting businesses.

  • Young scholars build tech solutions in line with the Bloodhound. Driving youth Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

  • InfoSec Training Kimberley

  • The training had further help incapacitate local techies skills in building secure applications and groom talent that would be agents of digital and online defense in the province.

    At the driving end was the Geekulcha Student Society (GKSS) which has been responsible for hosting various Hackathons in the province.

  • The NCDevHack Hackathon Takes Place

  • The Programme consists of various activities that will take place during the 30+ Hours of the Hackathon. Mentors will be on board help you throughout. You can Download the Programme.

    Hackathon programme to include:

    Friday Afternoon

    - Teams to be formed
    - Design Thinking session: Coming up with solutions
    - Everyone goes home

    Saturday

    - Township Digital Economy session
    - Hackathon starts - Hack-away
    - User testing + Business Case
    - 15:00 First pitch session

    Sunday

    - Mid-night Pitch
    - 15:00 Presentations + Judging
    - Prize giving
    - Go home

    * NB: Food, water and snacks will be provided during the period of the hackathon.
  • Engineers Without Boarders IoT Design Challenge

  • On 8th September EWB-SA will launch its first ever Design Challenge. Students will design sensor networks that will later be deployed across South Africa in order to collect a national data set of key indicators of health and well-being in informal settlements. This data can then be used to inform innovation activities around informal housing in South Africa. We call it Internet of Things for Social Good.

    The order of events for the weekend is as follows:

    Friday Afternoon

    - Challenge Context: Panel Discussion on informal structures
    - Technical Application: Panel Discussion the role and length of Technology in settlement innovation
    - Team formation starts
    - Challenge Design Thinking: Dialogue on design in the context of informality
    - Team formation ends

    Saturday

    - Challenge Tech Skills: Technical workshop on measurement, data & sensors
    - Challenge starts!


    Sunday

    - Challenge ends!
